LMU's Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Licensure Program (Post-Bac) is a certification program leading to the
initial teaching license in Tennessee. Specifically designed for working adults with a college degree,
LMU's program offers an ideal alternative approach to teacher education for people who want to become
elementary or secondary school teachers.

Special Features
LMU's faculty is a team of experienced educators who bring to the classroom the practical
knowledge and expertise that come from years as teachers and administrators in public
schools. They also have extensive experience with educational practices in other countries,
which lends classes a broader perspective.
The program is constantly updated to meet the changing needs of both our students and our
public schools.
The areas of accelerated licensure include:
- Biology
- Business Education
- Chemistry
- Elementary K-6
- English
- History
- Kinesiology
- Physical Education
- Secondary Mathematics
- Visual Arts
The program is a cohort program with a new class starting each fall.
Course Information
Students in the program complete at least 18 semester hours of graduate coursework--two semesters of
the professional core and one semester (16 weeks) of full-time student teaching. Courses during the
first two semesters are held two Saturdays a month.
The 18 semester hours of professional education courses follow a fall-spring-fall rotation:
- Fall: Introduction to Teaching and Learning (6 cr. hrs.)
- Spring: Extending and Refining Knowledge of Teaching and Learning (6 cr. hrs.)
- Fall: Enhanced Student Teaching (6 cr. hrs.)
Students pursuing elementary certification take 18 additional hours of coursework (for a total of 36 hours)
during the first fall and spring semesters.
Students pursuing a secondary certification may have to take additional undergraduate courses to
attain the knowledge required for their chosen area.
Internships
All student teachers in the program are required to complete one semester of full-time student
teaching in a public school classroom. In recent years, our student teachers have taught in
school districts throughout eastern Tennessee and in Virginia, Kentucky, and northern Georgia.
Career Opportunities
LMU's program graduates are highly sought after by school districts in Tennessee, Georgia,
Virginia and Kentucky.
Graduate & Professional Opportunities
Since classes in the program are graduate-level courses, the Department of Graduate Education
offers Post-Bac students the opportunity to earn a master's degree in education (in curriculum
and instruction) by taking only five additional master's level courses.
Many students also continue their graduate studies at LMU and receive their post-master's
Educational Specialist (EdS) degree.
Clubs & Organizations
Students in the program are eligible to join the Tennessee Teacher Education Association,
the state's largest professional educators organization.
