The Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) degree program, Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) concentration, prepares nurses in an advanced practice role with competencies in family health promotion and culturally competent clinical management of common conditions across the life span. The 17-month FNP concentration requires 43 semester hours of graduate course work including 720 clinical hours. A written comprehensive exam is required during the final semester. Students also complete a directed scholarly project.

The LMU M.S.N. Nurse Anesthesia concentration prepares nurses in an advanced practice role with competencies in Nurse Anesthesia across the life span.  The 28-month program requires 88 semester hours of graduate course work including six semesters in clinical practicum.  A written comprehensive exam is required during the final semester.  Students also complete a directed scholarly project.

Why should you get your M.S.N. at LMU?

Graduate education will challenge you and allow you to discover new ways to view yourself, to view the art and science of nursing, and to view the world at large. The M.S.N. degree brings new career opportunities. In addition to allowing you to enjoy increased job opportunities and potentially an increased salary, graduate education will improve your self-confidence and renew your commitment to nursing. Many nurses find that the additional challenge and autonomy enjoyed by nurse practitioners result in higher job satisfaction.

Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Concentration

At LMU, the FNP concentration has been designed to meet standards for advanced practice education as mandated by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty. The FNP concentration has been approved by both the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Tennessee Board of Nursing.  In addition, the M.S.N. program has been granted Candidacy Status by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC), and in Fall 2007 is undergoing a site visit for initial accreditation.  Graduates of the FNP concentration will have met the eligibility criteria for both the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners FNP certification examinations.

The LMU nursing faculty is committed to challenging you to meet high academic standards while ensuring that you have the tools you need to be successful. Small classes and experienced faculty will enhance your graduate experience. The ability to share learning resources with the new medical school will further augment your learning environment. Faculty will work closely with students to help them master the core knowledge base needed for advanced practice. Faculty will also work with clinical preceptors to create clinical learning environments that will allow you to assume increasing responsibility for patient care as you progress through the program.

Full-time and part-time options are available. A full time student can complete the program in four sequential semesters (inclusive of a summer semester). This full-time plan of progression will take 17 months to complete. Part-time students must meet with their advisor to plan an individualized progression plan. This will help to ensure that course prerequisites and future course availability will be incorporated into the plan. (See sample plans below.)

Prospective students who do not hold a B.S.N. should meet with an advisor to determine and plan a course of study.

Additional Requirements for Admitted Students

Before the first day of class, accepted students must have a physical exam and submit their Health Profile form.  Students must have and maintain for the duration of the program:  current infant, children and adult CPR certification, health insurance, malpractice insurance, current immunizations, annual TB status, proof of Hepatitis B vaccination or signed declination form, rubella and rubeola immunization or documentation of immunity and a negative drug screen.  See M.S.N. Handbook and Catalog for details.

If a student is assigned for clinical experiences/practicum at a clinical affiliate, other affiliate agency, organization, or school requiring a criminal background check, the student will be required to provide the requested information.  Students are allowed in the facility at the clinical affiliate, other affiliate agency, organization or school's discretion.  If the agency denies the student's acceptance into the facility, the student will not be able to complete the clinical/practicum/field experience and may be withdrawn from the program.

In certain situations, investigative background reports are ongoing and may be conducted at any time.  Access to the program may be denied at any time by the agency or Lincoln Memorial University.

Those applying to the Nurse Anesthesia concentration, if selected, will attend an admissions committee interview.  Invitations for admission interviews will be sent no later than two weeks prior to the interview process.

Clinical Placements

Most clinical placements for the Family Nurse Practitioner concentration will be within commuting distance from the main Harrogate campus.  If a student resides further away from campus and can help faculty identify a willing and capable preceptor in their home community, a clinical placement in that home area may be possible.  (Please discuss this option as soon as possible with your faculty.)  Clinical placements may be in private practices, in community health centers, in public health centers and other settings which can help meet the learning needs of the student.  The LMU faculty will work closely with clinical preceptors to help you maximize the benefit of your practical experiences.

Most Nurse Anesthesia concentration clinical placements will be within commuting distance from the Harrogate and/or the West Knoxville satellite campus.  The Nurse Anesthesia concentration Assistant Director will coordinate clinical experiences with both students and clinical sites.

Certification

In Tennessee and in many states, being recognized as an advanced practice nurse requires a master's degree in nursing and national certification.  Completion of FNP concentration provides the eligibility requirements for the FNP certification examinations offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.  If you plan to practice in a state other than Tennessee, it will be important to contact the state board of nursing for details about advanced practice nursing in that state.
