Gettysburg, Nov. 19, [1863] 9 p.m.

Dear Son Scuyler,

The Great National Funeral is over. Such an Assemblage has never been before and probably never will be again. A sober intelligent sympathizing people, no hilarity, drinking, or carousing.

All passed off well.

I arrived here on Tuesday evening, was kindly recvd - & warmly greeted by my former acquaintances.

Miss McClellan is at Tawney Town quiet sick. I shall not leave here before Saturday or Monday. Keep the papers containing the reports of the doings here. I write to Daniel on the other half of this sheet. I am a self appointed Commit[t]ee or escort to attend Miss McCright & her Friends to the Grounds & to call on the President Lincoln and Governor Curtin [to] take them by the Hand.

I have had a very pleasant time.

Your Father [William E. Schenck]
