Railsplitters Set Possible School Record In Opening Round Of LMU Fall Invitational

TAZEWELL, TN – With the possibility of rain threatening completion of the Lincoln Memorial University Fall Golf Invitational, LMU Head Coach Travis Muncy’s Railsplitters are standing alone ahead of the field, 16 strokes under par as a team.

Cory Bartlett and Josh Collins are leading the charge for the Railsplitters in first and second place respectively after the first 18 holes of golf.  Bartlett shot a seven under 65 on the par 72 course in Monday’s first round action while Collins was six under with a round of 66.  The team score of 272, 16 strokes under par for the course, is at this time an unconfirmed school record for first round play in a tournament.

Monday’s effort could be a fatal blow to the other teams involved, as inclement weather is forecast for much of the week, meaning Tuesday’s final round could be terminated due to the rainy weather expected in the tri-state area.  That decision won’t be made until weather conditions at Woodlake Golf Course can be evaluated Tuesday morning.

In second place following Monday’s action was North Greenville College.  The Knights turned in a team score of 286, two strokes under par and 14 strokes behind Lincoln Memorial.  Shorter University and Tiffin University are tied for third with team scores of 290, while Anderson University, Walters State Community College and Wingate University are deadlocked in fourth place with rounds of 293.  The back half of the field consists of Tusculum College in eighth place (297), Brevard College in ninth with 298, the LMU Blue team in tenth with 301, Catawba College in eleventh place with 305 and the LMU Gray team in last place with a score of 351.

With a 90% chance of rain forecast for the Tazewell area on Tuesday, completion of the tournament doesn’t look good.  If the tournament is suspended, Monday’s monumental performance by the Railsplitter’s A-Team would be enough to bring home the hardware.  Tuesday’s second round play is scheduled to resume at 10:00 a.m. with a shotgun start at Woodlake Golf Course.
