Railsplitters Beat Georgetown For First Win Of The Year

HARROGATE, TN – After enduring 22 consecutive losses dating back to April 22, 2006, the Lincoln Memorial University men’s tennis team finally broke the losing streak Wednesday afternoon when it defeated the Bulldogs of Georgetown College 6-3 at home on the Annan Courts.

The victory came in the Railsplitters fourth match of the 2008 spring schedule and puts the Lincoln Memorial men at 1-3 on the year.  Although Georgetown is an NAIA institution, the Bulldogs entered Wednesday’s match ranked No. 4 in their region.

The Railsplitters opened the match with a pair of wins in doubles play.  LMU’s Hannes Ganss and Bastian Guenther defeated opponents Matias Carcamo and Andres Escalante 9-7 in the #1 doubles match, while teammates Andras Pauko and Zack Jones defeated Georgetown’s Frankie Roberts and Ismael Hadid in the #2 doubles match 8-4.

In the #2 doubles match, Eugenio Aspillaga and Will Pope of Georgetown defeated Lincoln Memorial’s Gabor Heredi-Szabo and Andrew Bates 8-4.

Lincoln Memorial looked strong in the singles action, taking victories in the #1, #2, #4 and #6 singles matches.  Hannes Ganss and Bastian Guenther turned in arguably the strongest performances of the day.  Ganss won in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 against Georgetown’s Matias Carcamo while Guenther rolled over opponent Andres Escalante 6-0, 6-1.

In #3 singles, Eugenio Aspillaga defeated LMU’s Gabor Heredi-Szabo 2-0, retired, while Railsplitter Andras Pauko needed three sets to knock off Frankie Roberts 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the #4 singles bout.

Lincoln Memorial split in the #5 and #6 singles matches.  Georgetown’s Ismael Hadid won over LMU’s Zack Jones in the #5 match 6-4, 6-4, while LMU freshman Cody Swindall defeated Will Pope 6-4, 6-3 at the #6 position.

With the monkey now off their backs, the Railsplitters will focus on picking up their first South Atlantic Conference win of the year this weekend when they travel to North Carolina to take on league opponents Catawba College and Wingate University on Saturday and Sunday.  Sunday’s match with Wingate gets underway at 10:00 a.m. while Saturday’s match with Catawba is also set for a 10:00 o’clock start.
