Railsplitters Fall In Season Opener

HARROGATE, TN – The Lincoln Memorial University men’s tennis team dropped its season opener on Monday afternoon at home on the Annan Courts.  The Railsplitters fell to the Bulldogs of Union College 2-7, winning in the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles matches.

The Railsplitters were originally supposed to have opened the year on Saturday in Wise, Virginia against the Highland Cavaliers of the University of Virginia-Wise.  However, that match was cancelled due to rainy conditions throughout the southwest Virginia area that prevented the two teams from playing.

On Monday, the Railsplitters began the match on a strong note when Hannes Ganss (Erlangen, Germany) and Bastian Guenther (Erlangen, Germany) won over opponents Anthony Hill and Gustavo Holz of Union 8-6 at No. 1 doubles.  The match proved to be LMU’s only win in doubles play, as LMU’s Andras Pauko (Budapest. Hungary) and Cody Swindall (Clintwood, KY) lost to Pablo Costa and Rafael Millon of 0-8 at the No. 2 position and Gabor Heredi-Szabo lost in No. 3 doubles to Union’s Luka Milicevic and Juan Manuel Lorenzo 5-8 at the No. 3 position.

In the singles action, again LMU’s only victory came in from the No. 1 position.  Hannes Ganss defeated Union’s Anthony Hill 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 to seal the win.  The Railsplitters weren’t as lucky in the No. 2 thru No. 6 positions as Bastian Guenther lost to Gustavo Holz 6-7, 1-6, Andras Pauko was defeated by Rafael Millon 3-6, 0-6, Gabor Heredi-Szabo was upended by Union’s Pablo Costa 1-6, 0-6, Zack Jones (Murfreesboro, TN) was defeated by Juan Manuel Lorenzo 0-6, 2-6 and Cody Swindall lost to Luka Milicevic 0-8.

Now 0-1 on the season, the Railsplitters have only a day to prepare for the first South Atlantic Conference match of the season.  On Wednesday afternoon the Railsplitters will travel to Newberry, South Carolina to take on the Indians of Newberry College.  The match will be a double header with the Lady Railsplitters who also take on Newberry.  Start time is set for 2:00 p.m.
