Slow Start Turns Into Quick Rally As Lady Railsplitters Defeat Newberry 3-1

HARROGATE, TN – The Lincoln Memorial University volleyball team jumped back above the .500 mark with a 3-1 win on Saturday afternoon over the visiting Indians of Newberry College.

Only hours after losing their second South Atlantic Conference match of the season to Catawba College on Friday night, the Lady Railsplitters came out flat in Saturday’s first game, losing to Newberry 30-24.  The loss gave the LMU women a since of urgency and the Lady Splitters put together a rally that lasted the remainder of the match.  Lincoln Memorial reeled off three consecutive victories in games two, three and four by winning 31-29, 30-27 and 31-29 to move to 3-2 in the South Atlantic Conference and 14-7 overall.

Sophomore Amanda Horenkamp (Murfreesboro, TN) had 15 kills to lead the Lady Splitters in the category, as freshman Ashley Knight (Palm Harbor, FL) had 11.  LMU newcomer Lauren Kiwacka (Tipp City, OH) distributed the ball well on Saturday by handing out 38 assists.

On defensive side of the net is possibly where the match was won.  Lincoln Memorial had four players with double figures in the digs category and was led by freshman defensive specialist Alicia MacIntyre (Muncie, IN).  MacIntyre had 19 digs for the match, while Horenkamp finished with 15 for the double-double and Karlee Wyrick (Cincinnati, OH) and freshman Lia Bevins (Piney Flats, TN) each had 10.  The Lady Railsplitters were equally as strong in their blocking.  Caitlin Hankins (Oklahoma City, OK) and Cami Lefeld (St. Henry, OH) combined for eight block assists at the net to lead LMU in the category.

On Wednesday the Lady Railsplitters will play host to the upper echelon of the South Atlantic Conference when Lincoln Memorial takes on Tusculum College, the #2 ranked team in the conference.  The Lady Pioneers come into the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium with an overall record of 15-7 and a 4-1 conference mark.  When the two teams met last year, both matches went the distance, lasting five games with each team winning once in 2006.  This Wednesday’s match is set for 6:30 p.m.
