OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release September 28, 2007 Catawba Hands LMU Volleyball First Home Loss HARROGATE, TN – The Catawba Indians put an end to the Lady Railsplitters' five match home winning streak on Friday night when they came into the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium and defeated the Lincoln Memorial volleyball team 3-0.
The loss to Catawba marks the second consecutive time the Lady Railsplitters have lost to the Indians dating back to September 23 of last year. Friday’s match however, was especially painful in that it knocked Lincoln Memorial from third to a tie for fourth place in the South Atlantic Conference race.
The first meeting and the first game of the year with Catawba started off just as LMU Head Coach Mike Smith had anticipated, extremely close with game-one going right down to the wire. LMU made a strong run but it was Catawba that came away with the 30-28 decision.
In game-two, LMU started off strong and took a commanding lead, but the Catawba Indians rallied and came all the way back to knock of the Lady Railsplitters 30-27 to take a two games to none lead.
Catawba shut the door on LMU in the final game by nearly running the table from the time the match was tied at 18-18. CC took the lead and never looked back coming away with a 30-21 win to improve to 3-2 in conference play and 13-7 overall.
Catawba’s Melissa Powers was the kills leader on the night, recording a game-high 25 kills while teammate Melissa Griffith ended the night with 11. CC setter Andi Henderson also had a solid offensive performance, handing out 45 assists on the evening.
For Lincoln Memorial, sophomore outside hitter Amanda Horenkamp (Murfreesboro, TN) was the only Lady Railsplitter to hit double figures in the kills category. Horenkamp finished the night with 14 kills while freshman setter Lauren Kiwacka (Tipp City, OH) added 32 assists.
Defensively, LMU’s Alicia McIntyre (Muncie, IN) set the standard by recording 24 digs on the evening. Also in double figures were Amanda Horenkamp (16), Amanda Baker (Los Banos, CA) (14), Lauren Kiwacka (13) and Karlee Wyrick (Cincinnati, OH) (12). Catawba College was led defensively by Melissa Griffith with 21 digs, while Mai Zoua Lo finished the night with 10.
The Lady Railsplitters fall to 2-2 in the South Atlantic Conference and to 13-7 overall as they will have a short night’s rest before taking on Newberry College on Saturday. The match with the Indians of Newberry College is set to get underway at 2:00 p.m. in LMU’s Mary E. Mars Gymnasium. -LMU- For additional
