OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release September 19, 2006 Win Over Newberry Extends LMU Volleyball Win Streak To Five HARROGATE, TN – It was clear from the opening game of the contest that the Indians of Newberry College were no match for the Lady Railsplitters on Tuesday night. (Box score) The LMU women opened up with a 30-16 win in game-one, and then took a 2-0 advantage with another 30-16 victory in the second game. Despite a late charge by the Indians in game-three, the Lady Railsplitter defensive effort prevailed and pushed LMU into a 30-27 in the third and final game for the 3-0 sweep. For Lincoln Memorial, Amanda Horenkamp (Murfreesboro, TN) and Joy Otto (Barrington, IL) led the offensive attack with 11 kills each, while setter Amber Vanderlin (Mesquite, TX) ran the offense handing out 34 assists. Defensively Blythe McCulley (Springfield, IL), Horenkamp, and Jency Basinger (Temecula, CA) denied the Indians the most. McCulley recorded 16 digs, while Horenkamp had 13, and Basinger 10 en route to the Lady Splitters eleventh win of the year. Incidentally, Otto and Vanderlin also had three block assists apiece by the end of the match. For Newberry, Lorena Maia had 7 kills, while Kilee Roope contributed 20 assists. On the defensive side of the net for the Indians, only Maia was able to come up with double figure digs, recording 10 on the night. The win brings the Lady Railsplitter’s record to 11-3 on the year with a road match against Brevard College on September 24 set as their next match. The Indians fall to 2-12 on overall and will square off against South Atlantic Conference foe Tusculum College this Friday night at home.
