Lady Splitters Sweep LMU Invitational

HARROGATE, TN – After winning Friday’s opening match against Ohio Valley University 3-0, the Lincoln Memorial University Lady Railsplitter volleyball team closed out the 2007 LMU Invitational on Saturday with a pair of 3-0 wins over University of the Cumberlands and Union College to remain unbeaten at 3-0 on the year.

In the morning match, LMU had little trouble disposing of the Patriots of the University of the Cumberlands.  Lincoln Memorial won i30-24, 30-23 and 30-16 to improve to 2-0.  Sophomore outside hitter Amanda Horenkamp (Murfreesboro, TN) and freshman Leah Cagle (Hendersonville, NC) led the Lady Railsplitter offensive.  Horenkamp finished the match with 10 kills, while Cagle contributed 36 assists.  Defensively, Horenkamp was equally as damaging to the Patriot’s cause, leading the way with 14 digs and four block assists.  Teammate Karlee Wyrick (Cincinnati, OH) also had 14 digs while newcomer Alicia McIntyre (Muncie, IN) added 10 digs.

In the nightcap, Lincoln Memorial came out strong and never looked back, rolling up 30-14, 30-22 and 30-27 wins over the Bulldogs from Union College.  The victory makes LMU 13-0 all-time over Union since the University adopted volleyball nearly 20 years ago.

Offensively, again it was Horenkamp that carried the load by notching 12 kills.  Freshman Ashley Knight (Palm Harbor, FL) added 10 and setter Leah Cagle turned in a game-high 37 assists.  On the defensive side of the net, Knight gave Lady Railsplitter fans a taste of what to expect over the next four years with 17 digs, while Horenkamp recorded 16.

At 3-0 on the year, the Lady Railsplitters have a long road stretch in front of them before returning to the friendly confines of the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium.  The LMU women will have until next Friday to prepare for the Carson-Newman Invitational in Jefferson City, Tennessee and won’t be home again until September 18 when they host Mars Hill College in the South Atlantic Conference home opener.
