OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release October 26, 2007 Catawba Takes Four-Game Win Over Lincoln Memorial SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba dropped the opening game, but rallied back to take a four-game win over visiting Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 25-30, 30-20, 30-14 and 30-27 to improve to 22-6 overall and 7-5 in the SAC. The Lady Railsplitters fall to 19-11 and 5-5. Game one went back-and-forth with 16 ties and eight lead changes. Lincoln Memorial pulled away down the stretch, scoring six of the last seven points. A kill by Amanda Horenkamp (Murfreesboro, TN) gave LMU a 25-24 lead then the sophomore served four points to give the visitors a 29-24 edge. Amanda Baker (Los Banos, CA) had a strong opening game for the Lady Railsplitters with seven kills and eight digs. Catawba jumped out to a 10-4 edge in game two behind the serving of Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC), who had three aces in a 6-0 run the broke a 4-4 tie. LMU fought back to tie the game at 15-15, but Powers would serve up consecutive aces for an 18-15 Catawba lead. Jasmine Chunn (Yadkinville, NC) had a pair of combo blocks in a five-point run that gave Catawba a 25-17 edge. Powers had five of Catawba’s six aces in game two then pounded down nine kills in a big game three win. The Lady Indians hit 46.5% for the game and rolled out to a 19-7 lead. Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC) had five of six Catawba points, with three kills and two aces, in an early run. Catawba got a big fourth game from freshman Lindsey Spears (Virginia Beach, VA), who had seven of her career-high 15 kills in the game. Another tight game saw a dozen ties and seven lead changes, but a late surge by Catawba proved to be the difference. Powers delivered a kill to tie the game at 25-25 and Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA) had a pair of aces to give the Lady Indians a 27-24 lead. LMU closed within 27-26, but a block and ace by Powers pushed Catawba to a game point. Chunn would kill off the final point. Powers finished with 21 kills, a career-high seven aces and five blocks to lead Catawba. Griffith had 11 kills and 30 digs, while Lo also had 11 kills and picked up 22 digs. Setter Andy Henderson (Swansboro, NC had 58 assists and 14 digs. Baker finished with 16 kills for the Lady Railsplitters and added 20 digs and four blocks.
