OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release October 19, 2007 Win Over Lenoir-Rhyne Puts Lady Railsplitter Volleyball Team Back In The Hunt HARROGATE, TN – The Lincoln Memorial University volleyball team moved back into the top-4 teams in the South Atlantic Conference race. Friday night’s victory over the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne put the LMU women above the .500 mark at 5-4 in conference play as the final two weeks of the regular season schedule rapidly approach.
Lincoln Memorial actually lost Friday night’s first game 30-20, as the Lady Railsplitters came out flat and with a lack of intensity. The slow start may have been due to the cancellation of Tuesday night’s match with Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, North Carolina due to a power outage on the MHC campus. In any case, Friday’s first game didn’t hinder the LMU women from mounting a comeback. LMU put together a run over the next three games that was for the most part won by hustle, desire and a never say die attitude.
In game two the Lady Railsplitters won a tight battle against the Bears that went beyond the wire. LMU pulled out a 34-32 decision that sparked the night’s comeback and aided in the Lady Railsplitters winning the next two games 30-21 and 30-24.
Lincoln Memorial owned the net on Friday evening, with junior Caitlin Hankins (Oklahoma City, OK) tallying five block-assists to form the wall. LMU middle hitter turned setter Lauren Kiwacka (Tipp City, OH) was also a force, turning in four block assists, while sophomore Alison Hess (Dayton, OH) had three. Lady Railsplitters Amanda Baker (Los Banos, CA) and Ashley Knight (Palm Harbor, FL) each had two.
Offensively Amanda Horenkamp (Murfreesboro, TN) was the spearhead of the Lady Railsplitter attack, turning in 15 kills on the night, while Ashley Knight had 14 and Lauren Kiwacka added 11 along with 35 assists.
Lenoir-Rhyne was led offensively by the duo of Caroline Albertelli and Abby Smith. Albertelli finished the match with a game-high 21 assists, while Smith recorded 15. Bears setter Lauren McLelland also handed out an incredible 52 assists to lead all players in the category.
Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 16-13 overall and 4-6 in league play while LMU improves to 17-10 on the year and 5-4 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Lady Railsplitters won’t have much time to celebrate Friday night’s win. On Saturday the LMU women will play host to future SAC opponent Brevard College at 2:00 p.m. in the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium. The match will be an especially emotional one for many of the Lady Railsplitters, but none more then seniors Amanda Baker and Karlee Wyrick (Cincinnati, OH) who will be recognized on LMU’s senior day. -LMU- For additional
