OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release October 18, 2006 Win Over Mars Hill Snaps Four Game Losing Streak for Lady Railsplitter Volleyball Team
After losing an emotional match to Carson-Newman only a night ago, there were worries from some the LMU women would come out flat with no life, but that wasn’t the case as the Lady Railsplitters took control early in the match and never looked back.
Floor leader Amber Vanderlin (Mesquite, TX) did a solid job of running the LMU offense by dishing out 34 assist, while seniors Joy Otto (Barrington, IL) and Blythe McCulley Springfield, IL) added 12 and 11 kills respectively.
Defensively the Lady Railsplitters were on top of their game with three individuals getting into double figures in the digs category. McCulley contributed 14 digs to finish with a double-double, while junior Jency Basinger (Temecula, CA) finished with a team-high 15 digs and freshman Amanda Horenkamp added another 12. At the net Otto, Cami Lefeld (St. Henry, IL) and freshman Alison Hess (Dayton, OH) each had two blocks.
For Mars Hill, Jessica Britt distributed 25 assists, while Rebekka Brown notched 13 kills on the night. Defensively, Tiffany Oreka handled 27 digs, while teammate Lindsey Phillips finished with 10.
Now 18-10 overall, the Lady Railsplitter’s next match will be this Saturday when they play host to Lenoir-Rhyne College in the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium. Saturday’s match will get underway at 2:00 p.m.
