LMU Unable to Close the Door on UAH

HARROGATE – The Lincoln Memorial University Lady Railsplitter volleyball team had an opportunity to hand the Lady Chargers of the University of Alabama-Huntsville a third loss in Gulf South Conference play Tuesday night but couldn’t seal the deal in the final two games of the match. (Box score)

After losing a tight battle in game-one 31-33, the Lady Railsplitters bounced back in the second game to pound UAH 30-20 and even the match a game apiece.  The win also gave the LMU women a good deal of momentum going into game-three, which in turn helped the Lady Splitters come away with a 30-26 win to take a two games to one lead.

With UAH on their heels, the LMU women continued to battle and came from behind late in game-four with an opportunity to put the match in the books.  However, the Lady Splitters couldn’t get the job done and UAH seized the opportunity.  The Lady Chargers playing with their backs to the wall and facing their third GSC loss reached down to pull out the 33-31 win to send the match to a fifth and final game.

As game-five got underway, it was clear that UAH now had the momentum and realized they had dodged a bullet earlier.  With that in mind, the Lady Chargers weren’t about to let LMU make it close again and slammed the door to take a 15-5 win and a 3-2 victory to sweep the home and away series for 2005.

LMU’s Kirsten Atkinson (Sweeny, Texas) and Heidi Dreiling (Augusta, Kansas) each recorded 15 kills to lead LMU in the category; while junior Joy Otto (Barrington, Illinois) had 14 and senior Melissa Blackwell (Victorville, California) added 11.

In the assist category, Lady Railsplitter setter Allison Holstein (Brownsburg, Indiana) handed out 51 assists in the losing effort, while Atkinson led the LMU women defensively with 21 digs, libero Courtney Marton (Springfield, Ohio) had 19, Holstein finished with 16, and sophomores Samantha Nestell (Ravenna, Michigan) and Karlee Wyrick (Cincinnati, Ohio) each had 10.

Having lost their last two matches, the Lady Railsplitters hope to get back on the winning track this Friday evening when they play host to the University of West Alabama in the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium to kick-off homecoming weekend at LMU.  Friday’s match gets underway at 6:00 p.m.
