West Florida Bounces Back to Defeat Lady Railsplitters

HARROGATE – After getting defeated soundly by the Lady Railsplitter volleyball team in the first game of Sunday’s Gulf South Conference match, the Lady Argonauts of West Florida rebounded quickly to win games two, three and four to take a 3-1 victory over LMU. (Box score)

The LMU women came out on fire in Sunday’s first game, winning by the score of 30-20.  Despite a slow but strong showing by the Lady Railsplitters in the second game, the somewhat flat Lady Argo’s managed to pull away for a 30-22 win to even the match a game apiece.   By the time game three emerged, West Florida had found its rhythm and captured a 30-21 win from the Lady Railsplitters to lead 2-1 going into what would eventually be the final game of the match.

In game four, both LMU and UWF see-sawed back and forth with the lead until the Lady Argonauts managed to pull ahead for good down the stretch with help from a solid performance on the service line from Kali Kalache.  The UWF women held off the Lady Railsplitters' late charge in game four to come away with a 30-27 win, dropping Lincoln Memorial to 12-5 on the year and 2-2 in the GSC.

Offensively LMU was led in the losing effort by Kirsten Atkinson (Sweeny, Texas) and Allison Holstein (Brownsburg, Indiana).  Atkinson recorded a team-high 10 kills, while Holstein had 37 assists.

On the defensive end for LMU, libero Courtney Marton (Springfield, Ohio) had 22 digs, while Holstein had 15 and teammate Karlee Wyrick (Cincinnati, Ohio) came off the bench to add 10.

For West Florida, Naiara Fernandes led the way with 18 kills, while Jessica Bragion and Lindsay Seek both contributed 13 for the match.  Lady Argonauts Melina Pereira and Marcela Cunha both distributed the ball well.  Pereira handed out 30 assists, while Cunha added 23.

Defensively, Fernandes again carried the UWF women as well with 18 digs; while teammates Jessica Bragion had 16, Jerica Carter recorded 13 and Melina Pereira chipped in 12 en route to the Lady Argonauts thirteenth win overall and their four GSC win of the year.

The Lady Railsplitters now prepare for their third road conference match of the season.  This week the LMU women travel to Carrollton, Georgia to take on the Lady Braves of the University of West Georgia.  The match with West Georgia will get underway at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
