Lady Railsplitters Edge Valdosta State 

HARROGATE – It took five games, but Saturday afternoon the Lincoln Memorial University Lady Railsplitter volleyball team improved to 2-1 in Gulf South Conference play with a 3-2 win over the visiting Lady Blazers of Valdosta State University. (Box score)

LMU rolled up a 30-21 win in the opener but lost games two and three 24-30 and 26-30 to trail two games to one.  In the fourth game of the afternoon however, the Lady Railsplitters bested Valdosta State 30-22, and then came from behind to win the match in game-five with a 15-11 win against the Lady Blazers.

Senior Kirsten Atkinson (Sweeny, Texas) had one of her best offensive performances of the year, recording 20 kills, while teammate Joy Otto (Barrington, Illinois) finished with 14 and junior Heidi Dreiling (Augusta, Kansas) had 13.  Lady Railsplitter senior setter Allison Holstein (Brownsburg, Indiana) also finished with a match-high 56 assists.

Defensively LMU had three players to find double figures in the digs category.  Libero Courtney Marton (Springfield, Ohio) finished the afternoon with a game-high 23 digs, while Holstein had 16 and Atkinson 15 to help lift the Lady Railsplitters to victory.

For Valdosta State, Laura-Lee Atkinson recorded 20 kills, while Valerie Haven finished with 13, Jill Berkery 11, and Bentley Knox 10 for the Lady Blazers.  Setter Niki Patriarca helped lead the attack with 51 assists.

Defensively, four Lady Blazers were especially on their game.  Atkinson logged 14 digs on the afternoon, while Bree Benners had 13, and Ana Pendowski and Niki Patriarca had 10.

The Lady Railsplitters move to 12-4 overall with Saturday’s win and 2-1 in the conference heading into Sunday’s home league match with the University of West Florida.  The Lady Argonauts come into the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium with a record of 12-4 overall and 3-1 in GSC play.  Match time is set for 1:00 p.m.
