LMU Volleyball Sweeps the Cumberlands

WILLIAMSBURG, KY – The Lincoln Memorial University volleyball team improved to 9-3 Tuesday evening by defeating Cumberland University and the University of the Cumberlands in a tri-match held in Williamsburg, Kentucky.

The Lady Railsplitters got the evening started with a 3-2 win over the Lady Bulldogs of Cumberland University of Lebanon, Tennessee.  LMU defeated CU in five games, winning game one 30-19, losing game two 20-30, losing game three 27-30, winning game four 31-29 and winning game five 15-11.

Lady Railsplitter junior Heidi Dreiling (Augusta, Kansas) led LMU offensively with a season-high 19 kills, while middle hitter Melissa Blackwell (Victorville, California) finished with 17. 

Teammate Allison Holstein (Brownsburg, Indiana) continued to run the offense, again surpassing her single match season-high with 50 assists, while senior Kirsten Atkinson (Sweeny, Texas) posted 15 digs, defensive specialist Courtney Marton (Springfield, Ohio) had 13 and Holstein finished with 12.

In the nightcap, LMU got solid offensive performances from Atkinson, Dreiling, Blackwell, and freshman Cami Lefeld (St. Henry, Ohio) in the 3-1 win over the Patriots.  Atkinson led the team with 17 kills, while Dreiling and Blackwell each posted 16 and Lefeld hit double figures with 10 in the Lady Splitters 26-30, 30-22, 30-21, 30-17 victory.

Setter Allison Holstein contributed 45 assists in the second victory of the night, as teammate Courtney Marton led the way defensively with 11 digs and junior Blythe McCulley Springfield, Illinois) added 10.

The Lady Railsplitters now prepare for their first two conference matches of the season.  Unfortunately, both matches will be on the road this weekend in the team’s first of two swings through the state of Alabama.  The LMU women will play the University of Montevallo on Saturday and the University of West Alabama this Sunday.
