NKU Hands LMU Volleyball Team First Loss

HARROGATE – Northern Kentucky University came into the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium Thursday evening and did what no other LMU opponent has been able to do this season... give the Lady Railsplitters their first loss of the year. (box score)

NKU knocked off the Lady Railsplitters in three games, winning 30-27, 30-21 and 31-29 en route to their fourth win of the year, while improving their overall record to 4-1.  With the loss, the LMU women fall to 4-1 heading into tomorrow’s Carson-Newman College Invitational held in Jefferson City, Tennessee.

The Norse were led offensively by Liz Holmes and Andrea Lanham.  Holmes finished the night with 15 kills, while Lanham contributed 34 assists.  Also hitting double figures in the kill category was NKU’s Tristen Dye who posted 10 for the match.  Defensively Maria Tieman had 11 digs.

For LMU it was junior Heidi Dreiling (Augusta, KS) and senior Allison Holstein (Brownsburg, IN) who carried the Lady Railsplitter offensively.  Dreiling finished the evening with 12 kills, while Holstein recorded a season-high 34 assists in the losing effort.

From a defensive standpoint, LMU defensive specialist Courtney Marton (Springfield, OH) led all players with 13 digs, while teammate Blythe McCulley (Springfield, IL) finished closely behind with nine.

On Friday afternoon at 2:15 p.m. the Lady Railsplitters will try to bounce back from Thursday evening’s loss when they play Newberry College in the first round of the CNC Invitational before capping off the day with Palm Beach Atlantic.

On Saturday the Lady Railsplitters face Augusta State University of the Peach Belt Athletic Conference and then round out the weekend against Lander University late Saturday afternoon.  LMU’s next home match will be September 7, against Union College.
