LMU, Mars Hill Split SAC Softball Series

MARS HILL, NC -- The Mars Hill softball team split with Lincoln Memorial University Wednesday afternoon at Ponder Park. MHC won the first game 9-2 and then lost the nightcap, 7-2. The Lady Lions are now 33-10 overall while the Lady Railsplitters fell 27-12 on the season. Both teams left the field with a 5-5 record in the league.

Game 1: MHC 9, LMU 2
After the teams traded runs in the first inning of play, MHC put up eight runs in the third frame on seven hits and one LMU error. Kristina Osborn (Birmingham, AL), Anna James (Bellevue, WA) and Rebekah Huff (Mars Hill, NC) recorded two-RBI apiece in the inning. James drove her runs in hitting a double to center field. LMU plated their final run in the fifth inning when Amanda Wampler (Powell, TN) singled to drive in Alicia MacIntyre (Muncie, IN).

Huff, Osborn and James recorded two hits apiece to lead MHC at the plate. The trio also tallied a pair of RBI each. Tiffany Farthing (Kure Beach, NC) picked up the win (10-5) for the Lady Lions allowing just four hits and one run.

Wampler led LMU going 3-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. She also took the loss (10-5) on the mound for the Lady Railsplitters.

Game 2: LMU 7, MHC 2
The tables turned in game two as LMU scored five runs in their first two at-bats to jump out to a lead they would not relinquish. Sara Henn (Kettering, OH) hit a two-run homer in the first inning to account for those runs and then she hit a ball that could not be fielded by the Lady Lions' shortstop that plated two of the three runs in the second inning.

The teams traded single runs in the fifth inning. Huff hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Jenny Hoyt (Rose Hill, KS) for the Lions first run of the game. Henn hit a solo homer in the sixth inning to end the Lady Railsplitter scoring at seven. Huff doubled to plate Ashley Seawell (Asheboro, NC) in the seventh inning to make the final tally, 7-2.

Henn was 2-5 with five RBI, two homeruns and a pair of runs scored. Devin Sponseller (Delaware, OH) posted two hits in the win. Henn also took care of business on the mound scattering four hits and one run in five innings of work. She improved to 9-5 on the year.

Ashley Harber (Goose Creek, SC) led MHC going 2-3 while Huff went 1-2 with two RBI and a double. Tara West (Urbana, OH) took the loss for MHC on the mound.
