Lady Railsplitters Back On Winning Track

HARROGATE, TN – The Lincoln Memorial University softball team got back on the winning track in Monday afternoon’s non-conference double header with the University of the Cumberlands by winning 4-3 and 9-0 over the Patriots.

Over the weekend, the Lady Railsplitters dropped their South Atlantic Conference opener on the road when they were defeated 2-1 and 6-2 by the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, North Carolina.

Monday’s double header with Cumberland got started on a strong note when LMU jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the bottom of the fourth inning.  The Patriots battled back in the top of the fifth but the Lady Splitters answered the call with a run in the bottom of the inning before eventually coming away with a 4-3 victory.

Sophomore pitcher Sara Henn (Kettering, OH) improved to 6-2 with the win.  Henn scattered four Patriot hits over seven innings, allowing only three runs and one earned run with three walks and one strikeout.

At the plate, LMU’s Alisa Burk (Blaine, WA) and Ashley Knight (Palm Harbor, FL) carried the Lady Railsplitters.  Both were three-for-three in the game with Burk picking up an RBI on her fourth homerun of the year.

Game two was all the Lady Railsplitters.  LMU jumped out to a 6-0 lead by the bottom of the third inning and closed the deal in the fifth and sixth innings when they scored three more runs to run-rule the Patriots 9-0.

This time Sara Henn had the hot bat at the plate.  The sophomore was three-for-four with a double, her fourth and fifth homeruns of the season and four RBI.  Sophomore Devin Sponseller (Delaware, OH) also went out of the yard with her second blast of the season.

Picking up the win in game two for Lincoln Memorial was senior Amanda Wampler (Powell, TN).  Wampler pitched a four hit shutout with two walks and two strikeouts to improve her personal record to 7-4 on the year.

Now 21-8 on the season, the Lady Railsplitter’s are idle for much of the week as their conference double header with Newberry College scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed.  Game officials are expecting rainy conditions throughout the tri-state area and the league match-up will be moved to a later date.
