LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Office of Sports Information Sports Release March 11, 2008 Softball Splits With Union
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union College Lady Bulldogs captured a 9-6 win over Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) University in the second game of the doubleheader to earn a split at home Tuesday. Lincoln Memorial needed eight innings to win the first game 5-4.
After the doubleheader, Union moved to 7-11 on the year. Lincoln Memorial, a NCAA Division II member, went to 17-6.
Union used a five-run fifth inning to take the lead over the Lady Railsplitters in the second contest. Suzannah Behnken (Tempe, Ariz.) drove in the first two runs with her single and Ryan Travis (Hopkinsville, Ky.) doubled to push two more runs home. Travis later scored when Sherry DeVault (Baltimore, Ohio) delivered a base hit.
The Lady Bulldogs added a trio of insurance runs in the sixth inning.
Burk hit a two-run home run in the seventh and Lincoln Memorial scored another run to make the final score 9-6.
Travis finished the game 4-for-4 with three RBIs while Ashley Tatman (Lexington, Ky.) was 3-for-4. Lyla Blauser (Hopkinsville, Ky.), Sarah Driver (Hopkinsville, Ky.) and Ashley Eichelberger (Orangevale, Calif.) all scored two times a piece.
DeVault threw her sixth complete game of the season and improved her record to 3-5. She scattered 11 hits and struck out two Lady Railsplitters.
Amanda Wampler suffered the loss after she gave up six runs on 12 hits in five innings of work.
The opening game went one extra inning that saw Lincoln Memorial post a pair of runs while Union could only answer with a RBI single from DeVault.
After falling behind in the first inning, Union answered with RBI singles from Tatman and Behnken to tie the game. Tatman scored the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice off Travis’ bat.
The first runs of the day came from a Sara Henn hit a two-run home run. Lincoln Memorial tied the game in the fifth inning when Henn drove in Wampler.
Union had a chance to secure the win in the seventh inning. Driver led the inning off with a walk and moved up to second after a wild pitch. Tatman singled which put runners on the corner. Behnken hit a ground ball back to Mira McPeek at third base and she tagged Driver out and threw across to first for the double play.
Driver tossed all eight innings and struck out four in the loss. Her record went to 4-6 after she gave up four earned runs on seven hits. Wampler pitched six innings in relief for the win on the other side.
Tatman, Behnken and Andrea Green (Frankfort, Ky.) each had 2-for-4 games at the plate. Tatman also stole a base.
Lincoln Memorial was led by Devin Sponseller with a 3-for-3 effort with three RBIs. Burk added another hit to go with her home run.
