Lady Splitters Win Tight Battles Against Lady Patriots

HARROGATE, TN – Just before the thunder, lightning and heavy winds moved in Tuesday evening the Lincoln Memorial University Lady Railsplitter softball team squeezed out a double-header against the University of the Cumberlands by winning 4-2 and 2-0.

In the first game of the evening, LMU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Sara Henn (Kettering, OH) hit a laser to left field that scored teammate Brittney Walker (Ooltewah, TN) from third. 

In the top of the third, the Lady Patriots came storming back when Lara Jackson homered to right field to give the University of the Cumberlands a 3-1 lead. Lincoln Memorial quickly put a stop to the Lady Patriot celebration in the bottom of the inning when the Lady Splitters put three runs across the plate on two UC errors and a base it by Jessica Locker (Tipp City, OH) to take the final 4-2 advantage.

LMU’s Brittney Walker picked up the win to improve to 12-6 on the year.  Walker went the full seven innings in the circle, giving up six hits, two runs and two earned runs while striking out six Lady Patriot batters.

In the nightcap of the double-header, the game was deadlocked until the bottom of the sixth inning.  With rain and lightning threatening to force a suspension of the game, LMU’s Tiffany Evans (Bowling Green, KY) doubled to left field and then Jessica Locker homered to right center to give the Lady Splitters a 2-0 lead that eventually proved to be the fatal blow.

In addition to hitting the game-winning homerun, Locker also picked up the win in the second game.  Locker pitched the full seven innings of work, allowing only one Lady Patriot hit and no damage, with no walks and six strikeouts to improve to 1-1 on the season.

This Saturday the Lady Railsplitters play host to the Lady Panthers of Kentucky Wesleyan College at home on the Dorothy Neely Field.  Saturday’s double-header is set to get underway at 5:00 p.m.
