Mars Hill Sweeps LMU In Softball

 

MARS HILL, NC - Mars Hill College's softball team swept Lincoln Memorial University this afternoon at Ponder Park by scores of 10-2 and 5-4. Ashley Harber (Goose Creek, SC) hit a one-out solo homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Lions to victory in game two. MHC improved to 20-6 on the season while LMU fell to 12-8 on the year with the losses.

Game 1: MHC 10, LMU 2
Mars Hill belted out 14 hits en route to a 10-2 win over LMU in game one. After scoring one run in the first frame, MHC scored three runs in both the second and third innings to enjoy a 7-0 advantage heading into the fourth stanza. LMU scored a single run in the fourth before MHC added a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 8-1 going into the fifth set. LMU again scored a single run in the bottom of the fifth before the Lions ended the game scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on three hits and one LMU error.

Kristina Osborn (Birmingham, AL) and Anna James (Bellevue, WA) both hit homeruns in the contest. Osborn was 2-for-4 with two runs scored while James went 2-for-3 with five RBI. Tiffany Farthing (Kure Beach, NC) threw her ninth complete game to take her season record to 9-2 on the season.

Devin Sponseller and Casey Schutte each had a hit and an RBI to lead LMU. Brittney Walker took the loss (6-3) for LMU on the mound.

Game 2: MHC 5, LMU 4
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Harber hit a solo shot over the center field fence to propel MHC to a 5-4 victory in the nightcap. Harber was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI.

MHC scored a single run in the second inning and then added another score in the fourth before LMU got on the board in the fifth inning when Brittney Walker scored on a fielder's choice. The Railsplitters tied the game at 2-all in the sixth when Walker scored Cassey Schutte on a single up the middle.

MHC then took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth on three hits highlighted by a RBI double from Tiara Mitchell (North Charleston, SC). Jessica Locker then plated two runs on a double to center field to tie the contest at 4-4. Katie Blankenship (Candler, NC) then came in to pitch for Brantley and held LMU at bay for the win.

Besides Harber's offensive performance at the plate, Katie Bryden (Victoria, B.C., Canada) was 3-for-3 with two RBI. Blankenship threw 4.2 innings to pick up the win (7-2) for MHC.
