LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Office of Sports Information Sports Release March 14, 2007 Walker Breaks Record As Lady Splitters Add Two More To The Win Column
HARROGATE, TN – Lincoln Memorial softball senior Brittney Walker (Ooltewah, TN) became the University’s all-time total bases leader (429) in Wednesday’s 5-3 and 12-2 wins over visiting Union College.
Playing at home for the first time since March 8, the Lady Railsplitters allowed the Lady Bulldogs to draw first blood in the first inning of both games but bounced back each time to shutout Union for the remainder of each of Wednesday’s wins.
Pitcher/outfielder Brittney Walker captured the all-time total bases crown early in the first game and finished off LMU’s 5-3 win over Union by going two-for-three at the plate with a double (15), a homerun (7), a stolen base and four RBI. Lady Railsplitter Alisa Burk (Blaine, WA) also turned in a two-for-three performance in the first game to help the LMU cause.
Walker’s first game performance alone would have been quite an afternoon for most players. However, later in the afternoon in the second game, the four-year letter winner again turned in a two-for-three performance at the plate, notching her first triple of the season and recording her ninth homerun. Her success at the plate seemed to be contagious for LMU, as freshman Devin Sponseller (Delaware, OH) also finished two-for-three at the dish, senior Casey Schutte (Springfield, OH) was two-for-two with two RBI and senior Tiffany Evans (Bowling Green, KY) went out of the yard with her third homerun of the year.
Walker (7-3) and Kelly Click (Ashland, OH) (8-1) picked up the wins in the sweep. Walker went the full seven innings in the first game, allowing only six hits, three runs and three earned runs, while walking two batters and striking out seven. Click took over in relief for Jessica Stewart (Loudon, TN) in the first inning and pitched 3.2 innings of work, allowing only one hit, no damage, one walk and recording seven strikeouts before allowing teammate Jessica Locker (Tipp City, OH) to close the door in the fifth inning.
Now 17-9-1 on the year, the Lady Railsplitters are facing a long road stretch throughout the remainder of the month. In fact, the LMU women only have one remaining home series which will be played March 20 against Limestone College. This weekend the Lady Splitters will make the journey over to Spartanburg, South Carolina to participate in the USC Upstate Fast Pitch Classic where they are schedule to take on West Virginia Wesleyan, Columbus State, UNC-Pembroke and USC Upstate. Friday’s first game gets underway at 1:00 p.m. -LMU- For additional comments please contact, Head Coach: Dan Burns Phone: (423) 869-6242 |
