OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release April 2, 2006 LMU Softball Team Sweeps Series with Brevard BREVARD, NC – The Lincoln Memorial University softball team was victorious Sunday afternoon, sweeping a double-header on the road against host team Brevard College 4-1 and 11-3 to improve to 24-18 on the year. The first game of the day was highlighted at the plate by Lady Railsplitter Jessica Stewart’s (Loudon, TN) first homerun of her collegiate career. The 5’7” sophomore hit the long ball in the third inning of Sunday’s first win over Brevard. LMU junior pitcher Brittney Walker (Ooltewah, TN) got the win. Walker improved to 15-5 on the year, pitching all seven innings, allowing only three hits, one run and one earned run, while walking only one batter and striking out 11. In Sunday’s second game, the Lady Railsplitters turned Brevard’s field into a launching pad for LMU homeruns. Walker, freshman Chelsie McNew (Knoxville, TN) and freshman Danielle Cooper (Concord, NH) all went out of the yard. Walker hit her long ball in the sixth inning (7), while McNew (3), and Cooper (2), both went over the fence in the seventh. Cooper was three for four in the game with two RBI. Although it wasn’t necessary, the Lady Railsplitters used two pitchers in game-two against Brevard. Sophomore Kelly Click (Ashland, OH) got the win, pitching five innings, giving up seven hits, two runs and two earned runs while walking three batters and striking out one. In the sixth inning, teammate Amanda Wampler (Powell, TN) got to see some action in the circle. Normally a second baseman, Wampler went two innings of work, allowing four hits, one run and one earned run with a walk. Push comes to shove this week when the Lady Railsplitters travel to Decatur, Alabama for the Gulf South Conference Crossover where they will play eight games against GSC Western Division opponents. The games won’t count as conference matches but all are deemed regional meetings and could have a bearing on whether the LMU women receive any consideration for NCAA regional play following the GSC Tournament in early May.
