Two More Come-From-Behind Wins

WILLIAMSBURG, KY – In their final meeting of the 2006 season Tuesday evening, the Patriots of the University of the Cumberlands must have felt as though they had been cursed when the Lady Railsplitter softball team came from behind for the third consecutive time this year to hand them a defeat.

Earlier in the year, the LMU softball team knocked off the Patriots 3-0 and then pulled out a bottom of the seventh inning come-from-behind 6-5 win to begin the tear.  Yesterday, the Lady Railsplitters came back to take 3-2 and a 4-3 wins to sweep all four games with the University of the Cumberlands this season.

Kristen Hutchison (Benicia, CA) was 2-2 in the first game to lead LMU while Brittney Walker (Ooltewah, TN) and Chelsie McNew (Knoxville, TN) were both 1-3, each with a homerun, McNew was responsible for two RBI.  Also strong at the plate in the first game was Danielle Sowders (Knoxville, TN) who was 2-3 for the game.

The victory marked Walker’s nineteenth win this year.  Now 19-7 overall, walker pitched seven inning, allowing four hits, two runs and two earned runs, while allowing no walks and striking out four batters en route to victory.

LMU’s comeback win in game-two took eight innings and was decided with the international tiebreaker in effect.  The Lady Railsplitters used its three primary pitchers to pick-up the win.  Jessica Stewart (Loudon, TN), Kelly Click (Ashland, OH) and Brittney Walker all saw time in the circle.

Stewart pitched 4.1 innings of work with five hits, three runs, one earned run, two walks and four strikeouts before giving way to Click in the fifth inning.  Click went the next 2.2 innings, which earned her the win by giving up only two hits and no damage, with two strikeouts.  Walker entered the circle for the second time Tuesday in the eighth inning to record the save.  The Lady Railsplitter hurler retired the Patriots one, two, three end the game.

Danielle Sowders and Amanda Wampler (Powell, TN) were both 2-4 at the plate in the second game to help Lincoln Memorial achieve the 4-3 win.  LMU’s Casey Schutte (Springfield, OH) had a double in the game and Brittney Walker turned in her sixth triple of the season.

LMU travels to Carrollton, Georgia this weekend to take on the Braves of the University of West Georgia in a crucial Gulf South Conference Eastern Division four-game series.  LMU needs to win all four games to keep conference tournament hopes alive.
