LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release August 25, 2007 LMU Women’s Soccer Opens With Impressive 5-0 Win Over Pfeiffer University
HARROGATE, TN – Lincoln Memorial’s Lady Railsplitter soccer team punched in four goals in the first half and added another in the early minutes of the second half to come away with a 5-0 win over Pfeiffer in Saturday’s 2007 season-opener. The LMU women wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the first half. Senior Preseason All-South Atlantic Conference selection Heloisa de Oliveira (Campinas, Brazil) put the Lady Splitters up 1-0 at the 9:10 mark of the first half on a pass from teammate Camilla Verissimo (Brasilia, Brazil). Approximately 20 minutes later, de Oliveira struck again, this time with help from sophomore Catalina Varsalona (Miami, FL). Leading 2-0 at the 28:39 mark, the heat and the pressure applied by the Lady Railsplitters was clearly taking its toll on Pfeiffer. LMU took advantage of the opportunity and decided to put the game away early when senior Juliana Povoa (Brasilia, Brazil) hit freshman Becky Thompson (Frederick, MD) with a pass that Thompson drove into the back of the net to put the Lady Splitters on top 3-0. Realizing that Pfeiffer was on their heels somewhat, the Lady Railsplitter continued their relentless offensive attack and tacked on another goal at 36:52 when de Oliveira completed the hat trick on a pass by senior Patty Spielman (Melbourne, FL). The goal gave LMU a 4-0 which the Lady Splitters took into the intermission. Although LMU was never threatened in the second half, the Lady Railsplitters used the 4-0 advantage to work on the defensive end of their game. Lincoln Memorial’s only score of the second period came at 55:08 when Juliana Povoa scored unassisted for the final 5-0 margin. Now 1-0 on the year, the Lady Splitters will have until Tuesday to prepare for NCAA Division II powerhouse Clayton State University. CSU comes to Harrogate for a 6:00 p.m. start against the LMU women. The match will be the season-opener for CSU who was supposed to have played its first game of the season Friday against the University of Alabama-Huntsville. That match was postponed due to bad weather. Soccer Game Summary
