LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release November 2, 2007 Thompson’s Late-Match Goal Allows Lady Railsplitters To Compete For SAC Tournament Title
ROCK HILL, SC – First Team All-South Atlantic Conference member and LMU freshman forward Becky Thompson (Frederick, MD) scored her 10th goal of the season, which happened to be the game-winning-goal in the Lady Railsplitter’s South Atlantic Conference semifinal match against Tusculum College on Friday evening. Thompson’s goal came in the 81st minute of the match and eventually lifted the Lady Railsplitters to a 1-0 win over the Lady Pioneers to put LMU in Sunday’s conference championship match against Catawba College.
On Friday evening, the two east Tennessee teams played to a 0-0 tie over the first 80:23 before Thompson was able to score unassisted on a breakaway goal that broke the scoreless deadlock. Lincoln Memorial and Tusculum College had battled through a defensive struggle for most of the match, totaling only five total shots on goal before Thompson broke the silence.
Lincoln Memorial University’s victory dashed the Lady Pioneers hopes of capturing a South Atlantic Conference Tournament title this season, as the #18 Lady Pioneers fall to 14-6 on the year, with hopes of making the upcoming NCAA Southeast Region Tournament now in the air.
Their backs to the wall, the LMU women must now close the deal and win the tournament if they are to make the NCAA Regional tournament. Friday’s win gave the Lady Railsplitters one more life to live this season while improving to 14-4 on the year and earning with the opportunity to compete for their first South Atlantic Conference Tournament title on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. -LMU- For additional comments please contact, |
