Asbury College No Match For Lady Railsplitters

HARROGATE, TN – Sporting twenty-three players on the Eagle roster, Asbury College couldn’t find the right combination to stop the deadly Lady Railsplitters offensive attack on Wednesday afternoon, as LMU defeated Asbury in women’s soccer 8-1.

The victory is the fourth consecutive win for the Lady Railsplitters who started off the season by losing two of their first four matches.  Now 6-3 on the year, the Lady Railsplitters are starting to emerge as one of the stronger teams in the NCAA Division II Southeast region and are led by the lethal offensive ability of senior forward Heloisa de Oliveira (Campinas, Brazil).  Oliveira is the reining South Atlantic Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week and scored three additional goals in Wednesday’s match with Asbury College.

Also scoring against the Eagles was senior Patty Spielman (Melbourne, FL), Karina Campos (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Becky Thompson (Frederick, MD), Juliana Povoa (Brasilia, Brazil) and Lea Cataggio (Aberdeen, MD).  Spielman, midfielder Camilla Verissimo (Brasilia, Brazil) and Thompson also added assists in the Wednesday’s match.

This Saturday the Lady Railsplitters will have arguably their toughest test of the season when they travel to Hickory, North Carolina for their third conference bout of the season with Lenoir-Rhyne College.  Although the Bears are 6-3-2 this season and 1-1 in the conference, only a short time ago the LRC women defeated former nationally ranked opponent Carson-Newman College 2-1.

Saturday’s match with Lenoir-Rhyne could also be a crucial factor in the battle for positioning in the upcoming South Atlantic Conference Tournament.  Right now the LMU women are in a three-way tie for fourth place in the league standing but remain in control of their destiny for the remainder of the regular season schedule.  Saturday’s match starts at 3:30 p.m. on the Lenoir-Rhyne campus.
