LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release October 24, 2007 Thompson’s Two Goals Lift LMU Women’s Soccer Team Into Second Place Of South Atlantic Conference Race
HARROGATE, TN – Lincoln Memorial University freshman forward Becky Thompson (Frederick, MD) scored two goals on Wednesday afternoon to give the Lady Railsplitters a 2-1 victory over Mars Hill College in LMU’s final regular season home match.
Thompson scored her first goal of the afternoon on an unassisted breakaway down the left side in the 8th minute of the match to give the Lady Railsplitters a 1-0 advantage. Mars Hill countered in the late minutes of the first half when Frankie Armstrong came off the bench and scored in the 35th minute on a rebound in front of the goal. The scored tied at 1-1; neither team was able to break the deadlock before the end of the first half.
Although Lincoln Memorial out shot the Lions 19 to 12, the shots-on-goal were nearly even with LMU placing eight on frame and Mars Hill only seven. As fate would have it, Thompson’s shot-on-goal in the 81st minute turned out to be the fatal blow to the Lions. Thompson chipped a cross toward the box from the deep left corner that ricocheted off the post and into the goal. Despite numerous attempts in the final minutes, Mars Hill was denied the equalizer and the LMU women came away with their fourth conference win of the year.
Tuesday’s victory over Mars Hill solidifies the Lady Railsplitter’s quest to host first round action of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament next week. LMU has one final regular season match this weekend when they travel to Wingate, North Carolina to take on the Bulldogs of Wingate University. The Lady Railsplitters are now 11-4 on the year and 4-2 in SAC play, while the Bulldogs are 5-8-1 on the year and 1-4 in the conference. Saturday’s match gets underway at 6:00 p.m. on the Wingate campus. -LMU- For additional comments please contact, |
