Lady Railsplitters Knock Catawba Out Of SAC’s Top Spot

HARROGATE, TN – Playing on senior day in front of a partisan LMU crowd, the Lincoln Memorial University women’s soccer team upended the South Atlantic Conferences’ #1 team in Catawba College with a convincing 6-2 victory.

Incidentally, the Catawba Indians area also ranked as the NSCAA Southeast Region’s #4 team in the latest poll released last Tuesday.  The victory not only knocked Catawba (4-2-1 in the SAC) out of the #1 spot in the South Atlantic Conference race, it propelled the Lady Railsplitters into 3rd place with their record now 3-2 in league play.

Catawba got on the board first in Saturday’s match in the 5th minute when Alexandra Beshk received a pass thru the middle from the left side by teammate Alexa Baird to give the Catawba Indians a 1-0 lead.  LMU came roaring back in the 16th minute when senior Juliana Povoa (Brasilia, Brazil) caught a thru pass from the right side from teammate Karina Campos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) to tie the match at 1-1.  The goal gave LMU some much need offensive momentum and the Lady Railsplitters quickly used the lift to score a second goal only minutes later in the LMU’s Hanna-Mari Toivonen (Tampere, Finland) lobbed a ball over the defense and forward Heloisa de Oliveira (Campinas, Brazil) chipped it passed the goalkeeper to give LMU a 2-1 lead.

Feeling a sense of urgency, Catawba responded in the 35th minute after the two teams had traded number shots.  CC’s Alyssa Schoenberg found herself in the right place at the right time when teammate Carrie Wollaston sent a long direct free kick in front of the goal and Schoenberg punched it in to tie the game at 2-2.

After going into the half at a 2-2 tie, it was Lincoln Memorial that took the upper hand for good in the 61st minute of the match when senior Patty Spielman (Melbourne, FL) caught another pass from Toivonen near the right side of the goal.  Spielman chipped is past Catawba keeper Kathleen Blake for the 3-2 lead.

Later in the match, LMU would tack on two more goals on penalty kicks in the 71st and 73rd minutes of the match by Karina Campos and Heloisa de Oliveira to take a 5-2 lead, and then Oliveira scored her 24th goal of the season in the 77th minute on a one-v-one breakaway to ice the game.

Both keepers played exceptional an exceptional match on Saturday.  Kathleen Blake of Catawba and LMU’s Courtney Hollis (Fort Myers, FL) each record five saves on the day to lead their defensive units.

Catawba falls to 10-4-2 on the year and 4-2-1 in the South Atlantic Conference standings, while Lincoln Memorial moves to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play.  The Lady Railsplitters will now concentrate on a strong regular season finish with a home match against Mars Hill College on October 24 and a road match with Wingate University next Saturday.
