LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release October 17, 2007 Lady Eagles End LMU Streak At Seven With Strong Second Half Offensive Attack JEFFERSON CITY, TN – On Wednesday afternoon, the Carson-Newman College Lady Eagle soccer team did to the Lady Railsplitters what no other team has been able to do the past seven matches, hand LMU a loss. The Lady Eagles blanked Lincoln Memorial 3-0 with all of their goals coming in the second half of play.
#21 Carson-Newman and Lincoln Memorial played to a 0-0 tie following the first 45 minutes of the first half. C-N needed the first 17:28 of the second period to break the tie with the Lady Railsplitters and scored the first goal of the game in the 63rd minute when Nikki Brennan used a pass from teammate Zarmena Kasparites to send it to the far post for the 1-0 lead. The goal was surrounded by complaints from several Lady Railsplitters who were unhappy that a player was down with an injury on the field and felt the official should have stopped the clock. As a result, following Brennan’s goal, two LMU players received yellow cards with the clock stopped at 62:32.
Less than two minutes later, Carson-Newman’s Brennan took advantage of the turmoil and struck again, this time with help from Sage Sizemore for a breakaway goal that took the life out of the Lady Railsplitters. Brennen’s goal caught LMU goalkeeper Courtney Hollis (Fort Myers, FL) out of the net and quickly put Carson-Newman ahead 2-0.
The final goal of the match came when Morgan Gruenenfielde scored unassisted in the 78th minute to give the Lady Eagles their final 3-0 margin, thus breaking any spirit the Lady Railsplitters had remaining. “We played well but today they were clearly the better team.” said LMU Head Coach Helio D’Anna. “Now we’ll just have to wait and see what happens on Saturday with Catawba.”
To her credit, Lady Railsplitter goalkeeper Courtney Hollis denied nine Carson-Newman shots-on-goal however, the Lady Eagle attack was too much on LMU’s defensive end, as C-N out shot Lincoln Memorial 23-9, 12 shots of which were on goal.
Wednesday’s loss drops the Lady Railsplitters to 9-4 overall, but more importantly to 2-2 in South Atlantic Conference play. This weekend, the LMU women will host an emotional match against the Catawba Indians not only in terms of league play, Saturday will also be “senior day” for five Lady Railsplitters, who haven’t beaten Catawba in their past two meetings dating back to 2003. The Lady Railsplitters will take a record of 0-1-1 against the Catawba Indians into Saturday’s match which is set to get underway at 3:30 p.m. on the Les Gibbs Field. -LMU- For additional comments please contact, |
