LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release October 1, 2007 Lady Railsplitters Have Ship Turned In Right Direction HARROGATE, TN – With consecutive wins over seventh-ranked Tusculum College, West Virginia Tech and most recently Brevard College, the Lincoln Memorial University Lady Railsplitter soccer team now 5-3 overall 1-1 in the South Atlantic Conference seems to be on track with the thick of the conference schedule still ahead of them. When the Lady Railsplitters knocked off Tusculum College in a convincing manner, the win did a great deal for the confidence level of the struggling squad. The victory not only gave the Lady Railsplitters their first conference win of the year, it evened their league record at the .500 mark and started a streak of wins that continues to help the team build confidence every time on the field. In Saturday’s 9-1 win over Brevard College, LMU’s Heloisa de Oliveira (Campinas, Brazil) reached a milestone of sorts when she became the University’s career leader in goals, assists and in total points. Her efforts against Brevard brought her career goals scored total to 62, her career assists mark to 38 and her career point total to 162 which surpasses former Lady Railsplitter standout Erin Alexander (97’). The confidence that Oliveira received by achieving this honor falls back to the remainder of the team as well because were it not for their efforts, Oliveira might have never reached the milestone. Aside from non-conference matches with Asbury College this Wednesday and Presbyterian College and Milligan College next week, the Lady Railsplitters have only conference and regional matches remaining on the 2007 schedule. Of those matches, two will be at home which means that the LMU women will need all the confidence they can muster over the next eight games. One other thing the Lady Splitters don’t have to worry about this year is winning all of their region matches. While the LMU women are 4-2 in NCAA Southeast Region play following last week’s match with Tusculum, this year they are eligible for the conference tournament which could provide them an additional avenue into NCAA post-season play if they aren’t able to take care of business through some of the regular season schedule. As their game appears now however, the Lady Railsplitters are clicking on all eight cylinders and are primed to shoot out of the pack as a dark-horse to take the South Atlantic Conference regular season championship. This Wednesday’s match with Asbury is set to get underway at 2:00 p.m. on the Less Gibbs Field and will be the next step into what may be the Lady Railsplitters strongest team since the 1995 LMU women took the Gulf South Conference Championship but didn’t receive a bid to the NCAA South Region Tournament. Seniors Patty Spielman (Melbourne, FL), Juliana Povoa (Brasilia, Brazil), Camilla Verissimo (Brasilia, Brazil), Lauren Korte (Port St. Lucie, FL) and Heloisa de Oliveira all remember that feeling and aren’t about to let that happen in their final year at LMU. -LMU- For additional comments please contact, |
