LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release November 1, 2007 LMU Soccer Teams Fare Well At South Atlantic Conference Awards Ceremony ROCK HILL, SC – On Thursday evening, the Lincoln Memorial University men’s and women’s soccer teams attended the South Atlantic Conference Awards Ceremony in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The event represented the beginning of the 2007 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament.
Both teams were represented in a strong manner, with the Lincoln Memorial University men receiving the trophy as Co-Regular Season Champions of the South Atlantic Conference with a 5-1-1 conference record along with Tusculum College who also finished 5-1-1 in league play.
The Lady Railsplitters also brought home the hardware as Regular Season Champions, finishing regular season conference play with a mark of 5-2.
LMU made a strong showing on the All-South Atlantic Conference Teams, with Leandro Pereira (Brasilia, Brazil) and Heloisa de Oliveira (Campinas, Brazil) both earning First Team All-SAC honors and both receiving SAC Player of the Year in their respective sports.
Also earning First Team All-South Atlantic Conference Men’s Soccer honors was LMU goalkeeper Brent Cole (Knoxville, TN), midfielder Leonardo de Barros (Brasilia, Brazil) and defender Felipe Nogueira (Uberaba, Brazil). Named Second Team All-South Atlantic Conference were LMU midfielder Nelson Pizzaro (Pembroke Pines, FL) and defender Vitor Souza (Sorocaba, Brazil).
Making the 2007 Women’s Soccer All-South Atlantic Conference First Team along with Oliveira was freshman Becky Thompson (Frederick, MD). Lady Railsplitters making the second team were Juliana Povoa (Brasilia, Brazil) and Lea Cataggio (Aberdeen, MD).
Both Lincoln Memorial University soccer teams will play in semifinal round action on Friday in Rock Hill. The Railsplitters will take on in-state arch-rival Carson-Newman College at 3:00 p.m. while the Lady Railsplitters will square off against the Lady Pioneers of Tusculum College at 6:00 o’clock. The winners of those matches will advance to the conference tournament championship on Sunday afternoon.
