LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release January 23, 2008 Record Shooting Helps Catawba Beat LMU SALISBURY, NC -- Senior NeKeithia Howard scored a career-high 25 points to lift Catawba to an 85-80 win over visiting Lincoln Memorial in women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 8-9 overall and 1-4 in the SAC, while the Lady Railsplitters fall to 8-8 and 1-5. (Box score)Catawba connected on a school-record 65.3% (32-of-49) from the field, including a sparking 76% (19-of-25) in the final half to help erase a 46-38 deficit at the break. Howard made 12-of-15 shots and pulled down seven rebounds. Hillary Hampton added 16 points and eight assists and iced the game with a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining for the final margin. Howard scored back-to-back baskets to give Catawba an 81-80 lead with 53 seconds to go and Sicilia LoSauro added a pair of free throws with 25 seconds left for an 83-80 lead. It marked the first time this season that Catawba had one a game when trailing during the first half. Lincoln Memorial had control for much of the first half, leading by as many as 13 at 33-20. A 9-0 run brought Catawba within four then LMU surged back up by a dozen with 3:43 before the half. A jumper by Brooke Whitley tied the score at 49-all and Catawba went on top for the first time since the opening minutes at 55-53 on a Cristi Bartlett basket with 12:48 to play. Catawba twice built six-point leads only to see the Lady Railsplitters rally. Down 75-69, LMU went on top on a Andi Winney layup and grabbed a 78-75 lead on a basket by Stephanie Wagner. Shana Nicols had LMU up 80-77 with 1:52 left before Howard led Catawba back. Kara Harris led LMU with 23 points, followed by Wagner with 20. Nichols dished out 10 assists. Catawba held a 30-25 edge on the boards and LMU stayed close by scoring 32 points off 21 Lady Indian turnovers, but could not overcome the hot shooting by Catawba. The shooting record bested the old mark of 63.8% (37-of-58) vs. Gardner-Webb on Jan. 25, 1992. LMU will host Mars Hill on Saturday. -LMU- For additional
