HARROGATE, TN – The Lady Railsplitters entered Saturday night’s home game with Catawba College with only one win in the South Atlantic Conference at 1-5, while the Lady Indians shared the league lead with Carson-Newman at 4-1. (Box score)
From the opening tip of the game, Lincoln Memorial took control and opened up a double digit lead, extending the margin to fifteen points by the end of the first half. The Lady Railsplitters Kelsi Salas (Rock Falls, IL) sent her team to the locker room on a high note when she hit her first three pointer of the year on a shot nearly six feet behind mid court.
Sporting a 32-17 lead at the beginning of the second half, many Lady Railsplitter fans thought the game was over however, the Lady Indians refused to throw in the towel. Although Catawba trailed by as many as 19 points in the final twenty minutes of play, they managed to put together a run that started somewhere around the 10:20 mark and tied the game for the first time since the opening tip with only 1:55 to play. LMU refused to break in the final two minutes of play and managed to pull ahead to a five point lead on free throws by senior Betsy Bowser (Galveston, IN) and freshman Andi Winney (Yorktown, IN) for the 50-45 win over Catawba.
Winney was the only Lady Railsplitter to score double figures and led all scorers and all rebounders with 19 points 14 boards. Catawba’s Ingrid Easter came in off the bench to lead the Lady Indians with 13.
The loss drops the Lady Indians into a tie with Newberry College for third place in the South Atlantic Conference at 4-2, while the Lady Railsplitters improve their 2-5 heading into Wednesday night’s league road game with Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, North Carolina.
