LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release January 16, 2008 Defending SAC Tournament Champs Too Much For Lady Railsplitters HARROGATE, TN – With the threat of inclement weather only hours away, the defending South Atlantic Conference Tournament Champion Indians of Newberry College made the trek to Harrogate Wednesday evening and handed the Lady Railsplitters a 64-51 conference loss, dropping the LMU women to 0-4 in league play. Although it was LMU that started the game with a 5-0 run, Newberry came storming back and reeled off 11 unanswered points to take the lead for good and capture its twelfth win of the year and its third South Atlantic Conference victory.
Ashlee Wright carried the load offensively with 17 points, as she was the only Newberry player to score double figures. Wright was a perfect 8-8 from the floor and 1-1 from the line in 18 minutes played.
Lincoln Memorial placed three players in double figures and was led by point-guard Shawna Nicols (Milwaukee, WI) who scored 13 points. Lady Railsplitter sophomore Andi Winney (Yorktown, IN) finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Megan Davis (Petersburg, IN) came off the bench to contribute 10.
While the Indians improve to 12-2 overall and 3-2 in the South Atlantic Conference, the Lady Railsplitters continue to search for their first league win, standing at 7-7 overall with a 0-4 conference mark.
This weekend Lincoln Memorial will travel to Hickory, North Carolina to take on the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College in another effort to capture a conference victory. The Bears will are very similar to Newberry in that they will enter Saturday’s match-up looking for their third league win. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. in Hickory. -LMU- For additional
