Railsplitters Fall To Union In Home Opener

HARROGATE, TN – The Lincoln Memorial University men’s basketball team dropped its home opener on Saturday afternoon when the Bulldogs of Union College made the trek south from Barbourville, Kentucky and defeated the Railsplitters 86-68 to drop the LMU men to 0-3 on the year.  (Box score)

The Railsplitters and the Bulldogs see-sawed back and forth much of the first half before Union took a narrow 36-33 lead into the locker room.  Facing a three point deficit, LMU managed to come out in the second half with some fire and took a nine point lead with 15:53 to play however, the run was short lived and the Bulldogs started whittling away at the at the deficit.

Union’s comeback was sparked by an increase in defensive intensity that allowed the Bulldogs to take the lead for good with 10:50 to play in the game on a lay-up by Dennis Kerney.  While the Bulldogs were making their comeback, LMU’s shooting percentage plummeted and allowed Union to extend the lead to as many as 19 points on two different occasions before coming away with the 86-68 win over the Railsplitters.

The Railsplitters will have to try and sort things out with little time to rest after Saturday’s loss.  On Sunday the LMU men will play host to NAIA opponent Virginia Intermont College in the Tex Turner Arena at 5:00 p.m.  The game will follow the Lady Railsplitters' bout with Virginia State University which is set to tip-off at 3:00 o’clock.
