LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release January 12, 2008 Railsplitters Come From Behind To Defeat Brevard 59-56 HARROGATE, TN – The Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters trailed by as many as 21 points and spotted Brevard College a 9-0 lead in Saturday night’s non-conference battle of future South Atlantic Conference opponents before coming back to win 59-56 to capture their fifth victory of the year. (Box score)
The Tornados took the offensive game to the Railsplitters in the early minutes, scoring all six of the nine opening points in the paint to take a commanding 9-0 lead. The margin eventually inflated to 21 with 5:29 to play in the first half and LMU fans had nothing to cheer about. By the end of the first half, the Railsplitters had managed to cut the deficit to 11 as they went into the locker room trailing 37-26. As the second half got underway, Lincoln Memorial picked up where they left off at the end of the first half and by the 7:49 mark the Railsplitters took the lead for the first time 47-46. Although the Tornados regained the lead nearly two minutes later on a basket by Jonathan Whitson, the deficit was short lived, and Lincoln Memorial quickly got back the lead, holding off Brevard down the stretch to come away with the 59-56 win.
Railsplitter freshman Ryan Whitaker (Pineville, KY) led Lincoln Memorial in scoring with 15 points, while sophomore Beau Brown (Athens, TN) had 14 points and junior Wadner Joseph (Miami, FL) came in to score 11 off the bench. Terry Delaney (Murfreesboro, TN) led the Railsplitters in rebounding with eight boards.
Brevard was led in scoring by Jonathan Whitson. Whitson was the only Tornado player to score double figures as he put in a game-high 17 points. Teammate Sean Ferretti took top rebounding honors for the night with nine boards.
Now 5-9 overall and 0-3 in the South Atlantic Conference, the Railsplitters will return to league play on Wednesday evening when they play host to the Indians of Newberry College. The Indians are 5-8 overall and 0-4 in conference play. Wednesday’s game gets underway at 8:00 p.m. in the Tex Turner Arena. -LMU- For additional
