Hot-shooting Bulldogs Run Past Railsplitters 90-72

WINGATE, NC---The Wingate University Bulldogs topped the Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters 90-72 Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action at Cuddy Arena. With the win, the Bulldogs improve 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. Wingate has won nine of its last 10 contest. The Railsplitters fall to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in the league. (Box score)

The Bulldogs shot a season-best 60.3 percent from the field for the game (35-of-58). Wingate sophomore guard Brandon Plummer (Norfolk, Va.) scored 15 of his team-high 19 points in the first half. The Hampton University transfer was eight-of-nine from the field, while hitting all three shots from beyond the arc. Senior guard Ernest Mangum (New London, N.C.) added 13 points. Junior guard DeMario Mattox (Rocky Mount, Va.) had 12 points, five assists and five steals.

Bulldog senior forward/guard Sean Barnette (Rock Hill, S.C.) had 10 points and eight rebounds. Barnette has scored in double figures in 51 consecutive contests, dating to his sophomore season. Redshirt senior center Bryan Grier (Charlotte, N.C.) had nine points, nine rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots for the victorious Bulldogs.

Junior forward Terry Delaney (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) led the LMU attack with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Senior forward Emmanuel Njomo (Fairfax, Va.) added 11 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore point guard Beau Brown (Athens, Tenn.) had 10 points for the Railsplitters.

Wingate took charge early, jumping out to a 19-6 lead after seven minutes of play. Barnette capped the opening run with a lay-up from a Mangum assist. The Bulldogs would stretch the lead to 20 (33-13) at the 9:03 mark on a three-pointer from Plummer. Lincoln Memorial responded with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 12. Junior forward Wadner Joseph (Miami, Fla.) finished the LMU run with a lay-up, as Wingate’s margin shrunk to 33-21 with 6:18 to play in the opening frame.

The Bulldogs had the answer, scoring the next six points. A Barnette free throw made it 39-21 with four minutes to go. Wingate would take a 22-point lead into intermission, getting late three pointers from Barnette and Mangum to take a 51-29 edge to the locker room. Wingate shot 58.3 percent from the field in the first half, while hitting five-of-10 from three-point range. The Railsplitters shot 39.4 percent from the floor, while converting two-of-13 from beyond the arc.

Wingate stayed hot in the early stages of the second half, stretching the lead to 30 points (66-36) on a pair of Mangum free throws at the 14:51 mark. Wingate would take its largest lead of the night with 8:26 remaining on a Barnette lay-up to make it 79-48.

LMU cut the lead to 81-63 at the five-minute mark on a tip-in from Njomo, pulling the Railsplitters with 18 points. A put-back from Joseph cut the lead to 81-65 with 4:18 remaining. The Joseph follow completed a 17-2 flurry for the visitors.

The Bulldogs hit six-of-17 from three-point range Saturday. Wingate shot 63.6 percent (14-of-22) after intermission. Wingate’s season-best 60.3 percent effort was the Bulldogs’ best shooting night since Feb. 24, 2007, when Wingate hit 68.6 percent in a wild 122-116 SAC victory at Carson-Newman.

LMU shot 40.8 percent for the game (29-of-71), hitting four-of-20 three pointers. The Railsplitters held a 45-32 rebounding advantage, including a 20-4 edge on the offensive glass. Lincoln Memorial turned the ball over 24 times, while Wingate had 21 turnovers.

Wingate returns to action Wednesday, when they travel to Catawba College for an 8 p.m. SAC start time. The Bulldogs return home Saturday, when they host Lincoln (Pa.) University at 4 p.m. LMU returns to action Wednesday, when they travel to Tusculum College for an 8 p.m. SAC encounter.
