Sports Release April 7, 2007 Loss To Newberry In Continuation Game May Have Knocked Railsplitters Out Of Upcoming Conference Tournament
HARROGATE, TN – The weekend got started Friday evening with anything but ideal conditions for a baseball series. Cold temperatures and snow-filled skies Friday evening forced Lincoln Memorial and Newberry College to suspend game-one of what was to have been a three-game series between the two schools until Saturday.
The suspension meant that due to South Atlantic Conference rules the two teams would only be able to play two of the three games in the series. So, when Saturday’s action resumed around 1:00 p.m. with Newberry leading 4-1 in the top of the third inning, the Railsplitters who appeared to still reeling from the cold weather never responded, and Newberry eventually pulled out a 6-1 win in nine innings of play.
Although the loss may have sealed the Railsplitters fate from qualifying for the upcoming South Atlantic Conference Tournament, LMU did manage to salvage a split with the Indians by winning game-two of the series 9-8 in seven innings.
The series split with Newberry leaves the Indians three games ahead of Lincoln Memorial going into the final week of South Atlantic Conference regular season play at 10-10, while the Railsplitters stand at 7-12. Both teams will by vying for the sixth and final spot in the conference tournament, which will be held later this month in Greenville, South Carolina.
Next weekend the Indians host Catawba College while the Railsplitters will travel to Jefferson City, Tennessee to play arch rival Carson-Newman. If Lincoln Memorial is to have any chance at all in qualifying for the tournament, Newberry would have to have at least one of their games cancelled due to weather and LMU would have to sweep Carson-Newman. -LMU- For additional
