Rain Continues To Delay LMU-MHC Baseball Series

HARROGATE, TN – Rainy conditions throughout the tri-state area forced Lincoln Memorial and Mars Hill College to postpone the beginning of a three-game South Atlantic Conference baseball series that was scheduled to get underway on Friday night.

On Friday afternoon, LMU Head Coach Jeff Sziksai spoke with coaches at Mars Hill College and then announced that Friday’s game would be pushed back to Saturday, and that the two teams would play a double header on Saturday with the third and final game moved to Sunday.  At least that was the plan.

On Saturday Lincoln Memorial and Mars Hill did manage to get one game in.  Mars Hill jumped on the Railsplitters in the top of the first inning with a 1-0 lead and forced Lincoln Memorial to play catch-up baseball the remainder of the game.

Although LMU tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Tommy Casto (Deerfield Beach, FL), the Lions broke the game open in the top of the third on an RBI single by Brian Williams and a two RBI double by Danny Miller to take a 4-1 lead.

That lead proved to be just what the Lions would need to take a 7-6 win over LMU in the first game of the series as they held the Railsplitters off through nine full innings of play to advance their season record to 26-17 overall and 7-8 in the South Atlantic Conference.  The win also puts the Lions in fifth place in the league standings after Saturday’s play.

While the second game of the series did get underway, game officials suspended the game in the early innings due to rain that again moved into the Harrogate area.  The decision was made that game two would be resumed on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. with LMU leading 1-0 as they were when the game was suspended due to rain.

Games two and three will prove to be critical for the Railsplitters who need to win both games and then travel to Newberry, South Carolina next weekend and sweep the Indians if they are to meet their hopes of making the South Atlantic Conference Tournament in Hickory, North Carolina in two weeks.  Only the top six teams earn tournament bids and currently LMU stands in eighth place in the league.
