Willis Expected To Break LMU Stolen Base Record

HARROGATE, TN – On Thursday evening, Lincoln Memorial junior outfielder TeWayne Willis (Hazard, KY) tied a school record that has stood for 10 years.  In the bottom of the fifth inning in the Railsplitters 11-0 win over Brevard, Willis stole his 39th base of the season, thus tying former Railsplitter Chris Kline’s mark set back in 1997.

In only his first year as a Railsplitter, Willis has stepped in and become an immediate impact on the Lincoln Memorial University baseball program.  A transfer from Roane State Community College and former Perry County Central High School standout, Willis currently ranks third on the team in hitting percentage (.389), first in runs scored (52), first in hits (63), is tied for fourth in doubles (10), has one homerun and has collected 33 runs batted in.  All this is above and beyond his 39 stolen bases in 45 attempts.

As of April 13, Willis leads NCAA Division II baseball in stolen bases and ranks in the top-10 in stolen bases per game this season.  He and the Railsplitters are now 29-18 overall and 7-12 heading into this weekend’s conference series with Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee.  The Railsplitters need to sweep the Eagles this weekend and need Newberry to get swept by Catawba in order to qualify for next week’s South Atlantic Conference Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina.
