Sports Release April 12, 2007 Railsplitters On Track For Big Regular Season Finish
HARROGATE, TN – The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team swept a double-header from visiting Brevard College 2-1 and 11-0 Thursday evening to move to 29-18 on the year. The wins also give the Railsplitters one more win than they finished the 2006 season with a year ago when they were 28-25.
Although senior Joe Workman (Dayton, KY) got the start in the first game Thursday, it was teammate Zach Gray (Columbia, TN) that entered the game in the sixth inning and closed things out to grab the win. Workman allowed only one run, but walked five Brevard batters and struck out three before giving way to Gray. Gray pitched the final 4.2 innings allowing no runs, with three walks and five strikeouts. He moves to 5-4 on the year with the victory.
In game two, senior Kyle Wakefield (Kalamazoo, MI) earned the start and got some help from his teammates at the plate to pick up the win in only five innings of work. Wakefield pitched a three-hit shutout and allowed only three walks while striking out six Brevard College batters on the way to improving his personal record to 6-3 this season.
One of the highlights of the second game came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Railsplitter junior TeWayne Willis (Hazard, KY) stole his 39th base of the season to tie the Lincoln Memorial University single-season record for stolen bases. He and former Railsplitter Chris Kline are now tied for the single-season honor and with five games remaining on the regular season schedule, Willis is sure to become the new leader.
This weekend the Railsplitters can take another step forward in the resurgence of the LMU baseball program when they travel to Jefferson City, Tennessee to take on the Eagles of Carson-Newman College in a three-game conference series. The Railsplitters haven’t won 30 games since the 2002 campaign and have only surpassed the 30-win mark three times since 1999. Saturday’s action with the Eagles gets underway at noon in Jefferson City. -LMU- For additional
