Sports Release March 9, 2008 Wingate Takes Three-Game Sweep From Lincoln Memorial
HARROGATE, TN – After winning the first game of the series on Friday night 9-5 over the Railsplitters, the Bulldogs of Wingate University took two more bites out of Lincoln Memorial’s record on Sunday by winning games two and three 13-3 and 4-2 to sweep the series.
Wingate pounded out 17 hits in the first game of the day and crossed the plate 13 times to capture their second SAC win of the year. The Bulldogs were equally as stingy from a pitching standpoint, as Lee Oxendine allowed only nine LMU hits over nine innings of work. Oxendine held the Railsplitters to three runs, two earned runs, two walks and seven strikeouts en route improving his personal record to 1-2 this season.
The Railsplitters threw nearly everyone possible trying to silence the Bulldog bats. Freshman Steven Starbird (Rutledge, TN) started the game and got the loss. Starbird lasted only two innings, giving up five hits, four runs and four earned runs with one walk and two strikeouts. Mitch Kramer (Amherstberg, Ontario, Canada) entered the game in the third inning and went the next 3.1 innings, allowing six hits, four runs and three earned runs with three strikeouts. When Kramer got in trouble in the sixth, freshman Cody Pack (Andersonville, TN) took over on the mound to get LMU into the bottom of the inning. Pack gave up a hit and a walk in 0.2 innings of work. Finally, sophomore Scott Erland (Pegram, TN) pitched the final three innings for LMU. Erland gave up five hits, five runs and one earned run with one walk and three strikeouts.
In game two, Wingate jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but LMU came roaring back in the bottom of the third when TeWayne Willis (Hazard, KY) scored on an RBI single by teammate Storm Kaufman (Miramar, FL). Kaufman later scored when Casey Sedley (Miami, FL) laced an RBI single through the right side.
The score remained 3-2 in favor of the Bulldogs until the top of the seventh when Wingate tacked on another run on a Minner Labrador scored on an Aaron Knowles fielder’s choice. The Railsplitters tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh but were shut down by Bulldogs pitcher Tyler Almond who went the distance to improve to 3-0 on the year. Almond gave up six hits over seven innings allowing two runs, both of which were earned, while walking one batter and striking our six.
For the Railsplitters, Casey Sedley got the loss falling to 3-2 on the year. Sedley pitched six innings giving up nine hits, four runs and four earned runs with four walks and five strikeouts. Freshman Ray Burchell (Corryton, TN) entered the game in the seventh inning and gave up the final run that wasn’t earned while recording one strikeout.
Wingate University improved to 12-16 overall and 3-3 in the South Atlantic Conference while Lincoln Memorial falls to 14-12 and 2-7 in league play. The Railsplitters will be at home again next weekend when they play host to the Bears of Lenoir Rhyne College who are undefeated South Atlantic Conference play. The first game of the series is set for Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. -LMU- For additional
