Bulldogs Win Game One Against Railsplitters

HARROGATE, TN – Rainy conditions and cold weather couldn’t keep the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial and the Bulldogs of Wingate University from playing their scheduled Friday evening South Atlantic Conference baseball game.

Despite receiving nearly an inch of rain on Friday, the two teams squared off in the first game of a three game conference series on Friday evening with Wingate taking the upper hand with a 9-5 win over Lincoln Memorial.

The Bulldogs got the bats going early in the first inning and pounded out 16 hits over nine innings while Lincoln Memorial struggled at the plate, generating only seven hits for the game.

Wingate’s Blair Troutman and Cale Rogers carried the offensive attack with both going three for five at the plate and each picking up an RBI.  Two of Lincoln Memorial’s hits came from senior outfielder TeWayne Willis (Hazard, KY).  Willis was two for two with two walks a RBI and two runs scored.  Teammates Jason Pabon (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) and Casey Sedley (Miami, FL) were responsible for LMU’s other runs batted in.

On the mound, Wingate’s Dusty White picked up this third win to improve to 3-2 on the year.  White pitched six innings of work, gave up seven hits, five runs and two earned runs with one walk and two strikeouts.  Zak Laws close the door on the Railsplitters over the next three innings.  Laws tossed a no-hitter over the final three innings of play, with one walk and four strikeouts.

For Lincoln Memorial, Brett Vaughn (Hayesville, NC) got the loss, falling to 1-3 on the year.  Vaughn pitched the first six innings for the Railsplitters giving up nine hits, six runs and four earned runs with three walks and four strikeouts.  In the seventh inning, LMU’s Jason Davila (Plantation, FL) entered the game and threw two innings allowing three hits, one run and one earned run with one walk and one strikeout.  LMU freshman Ray Burchell (Corryton, TN) pitched the nine, allowing four hits, two runs and two earned runs as LMU fell to Wingate.

With inclement weather threatening the tri-state area late Friday night and into Saturday, games two and three may be pushed back to Sunday if they are able to be played at all.  If the forecast holds true and the Lamar Hennon Field gets the three to five inches of snowfall the weather man has called for, the probability is that the series with end with only one game in the book.
