LMU Takes Two From North Greenville In Baseball

HARROGATE, TN – The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team picked up a pair of non-conference victories on Wednesday afternoon by defeating North Greenville University at home on the Lamar Hennon Field 12-2 and 7-6.

The Railsplitters pounded out eleven hits in the first game and were led by senior Mike Richardson (Murfreesboro, TN) who was three for four at the plate with two RBI.  Also swinging a solid bat was outfielder Sergio Baez (Miami, FL) who was two for three on the game with two RBI.

LMU’s Scott Erland (Pegram, TN) improved to 2-0 with the win in game-one.  Erland pitched five innings of work, giving up seven hits, two runs and one earned run while walking two batters and striking out one.  Railsplitter freshman pitcher Logan Brady (Morristown, TN) entered the game in the sixth inning and closed the door on the Crusaders.  Brady allowed only two hits and no damage, with two walks and two strikeouts, as LMU came away with a 12-2 win.

The second game of the double-header proved to be a different story.  LMU trailed until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Railsplitters picked up four runs to tie the game sending it into extra innings.  After retiring the Crusaders one, two, three in the top of the eighth, LMU picked up the game-winning run with a pair of hits from Storm Kaufman (Miramar, FL) and Bryon Izzo (Miramar, FL) before senior Mickey Apple (Virginia Beach, VA) laid down the bunt that got Kaufman across the plate for the win.

While Curtis Wills (Folsom, CA) got the start and Brett Vaughn (Hayesville, NC) contributed an inning on the mound, it was senior Reed Neff (Brentwood, TN) that got credit for the win in game-two.  Wills pitched the first 4 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits, six runs and two earned runs, with one walk and three strikeouts.  Vaughn entered with one out on the board in the fifth and went the next 2 2/3 innings giving up just one hit and two walks before giving way to Neff in the eight.  Neff quickly shut the door on North Greenville, recording two strikeouts in the process to improve to 1-1 on the year.

This weekend the Railsplitters head to Hickory, North Carolina for a three-game conference series with Lenoir-Rhyne College.  The Bears are currently in second place of the South Atlantic Conference race at 22-3 overall and 4-1 in league play while the Railsplitters are 15-7 and 4-4 in the SAC.  A nine and a seven inning game are slated for Saturday and are set to get underway at noon, while Sunday’s single nine inning game will get underway at 1:00 o’clock.
