Railsplitters Split With Mars Hill

MARS HILL, NC - The Mars Hill Lions split a double-header with Lincoln Memorial University Saturday afternoon at Henderson Field. LMU won the first contest, 12-8 and then MHC took game two, 10-7. The Lions are now 14-28 overall and 5-14 in the SAC. LMU took their season record to 25-16 overall and 6-10 in the league.

In the first game, Mars Hill took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on four hits highlighted by a three-RBI triple from Marc Wassum (Winter Park, FL). The Railsplitters answered in their next at bat when they recorded four runs on four hits to tie the contest. Mike Richardson (Murfreesboro, TN) hit a double to right field that cleared the bases and drove in three of the four runs.

Each team scored single runs in the fourth frame before the Lions took a 8-5 lead in the fifth inning on two hits. Clarke Rollins (Mechanicsville, MD) had a two-RBI single in the inning. Bryon Izzo (Miramar, FL) hit a two-RBI double to bring LMU within one run and then Mickey Apple (Virginia Beach, VA) singled to plate Izzo and tie the contest at 8-all.

Dustin Rowland (Eagle River, AK) hit a two-RBI double in the eighth inning to give LMU a 10-8 lead they would not relinquish. Izzo hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to make the final tally, 12-8.

Sergio Baez (Miami, FL) went 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of run scored and and a RBI to lead LMU at the plate. Izzo had two hits, a homerun and four RBI. Richardson also had two hits to go along with three RBI. Reed Neff (Brentwood, TN) picked up the win (4-2) in relief for LMU throwing the final 4.1 innings. Neff only allowed the Lions one hit.

James Dean (Lake Butler, FL) was 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored. Wassum had four RBI in the contest and a triple. Cody Branton (Burnsville, NC) took the loss (2-8) for the Lions on the mound.

In game two MHC jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the second inning on four hits highlighted by a three-run homerun by Rollins and a solo homerun by Brian Williams (Orlando, FL). LMU cut the lead to 4-1 in the third inning when Tommy Casto (Hazard, KY) singled to score TeWayne Willis (Hazard, KY).

MHC added two runs in the third inning to go ahead 6-1 when Williams scored on a fielder’s choice and then Devin Presnell (Boone, NC) doubled to center field to score Dustin Kerley (Taylorsville, NC). The Lions then scored three runs in the fourth inning on four hits and one LMU error to extend their advantage to 9-1. Danny Miller (Gaithersburg, MD) hit a single down the right field line that scored two of the three runs.

LMU climbed back into the game in the fifth inning when they plated four runs on three hits and one Lion miscue to get within four runs (9-5) of the Lions. Derek Treece (Powell, TN) had a two-RBI double in the inning. Austin Boehme (Winston-Salem, NC) had an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth and MHC enjoyed a 10-5 advantage.

Rowland hit a solo homerun to lead off the seventh and then Treece scored on a fielder's choice after reaching base on a double to make the score 10-7. Then with two outs on the board, LMU loaded the bases but Joseph Keel (Rocky Mount, NC) came in to pitch in relief and got Casto to ground out to second base to end the scare.

Wassum and Williams each had three hits to pace MHC at the plate. Jason Kennell (Charlotte, NC) picked up the win (1-3) on the mound.

Willis, Casto and Treece each tallied two hits apiece in the loss. Joe Workman (Dayton, KY) took the loss (3-2) on the hill.

The teams will meet tomorrow at Henderson Field to complete the three game set. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
