#28 Catawba Completes Weekend Sweep of LMU, Winning 14-4 And 2-0

SALISBURY, NC - Catawba completed a three-game sweep over visiting Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference baseball action, winning both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park by the scores of 14-4 and 2-0. The wins keep the 28th-ranked Catawba Indians atop the league standings, improving to 27-12 overall and 13-5 in the SAC. The Railsplitters fall to 22-17-1 and 4-11.

Catawba spotted LMU a 2-0 lead after a half inning on Casey Sedley’s (Miami, FL) two-run homer, but the Indians scored four times in its opening frame and never trailed the rest of the day. After a single and two walks loaded the bases, Craige Lyerly’s (Salisbury, NC) rocket between third and short bounded off Derek Treece (Powell, TN) and into the left field corner for a bases-clearing triple and a 3-2 lead.

Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) doubled home a run in the second and hit the first of his two home runs in the fourth to push the Catawba lead to 7-3. His second dinger and a solo shot by Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC) extended the margin to 11-4 after six.

Sands had four hits and five RBI in the opener, while Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) had five hits. Each scored four runs. Lyerly had three hits. Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) improved to 5-1 as he allowed four runs on six hits over eight innings of work. Sedley and Tommy Castro (Deerfield Beach, FL) each collected two hits for LMU.

After the teams had combined for 54 runs in the opening two games of the series, Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC) out-dueled Sedley in the nightcap in the 2-0 shutout. Ketner surrendered just three hits, walked one and hit two batters in going the distance. He struck out six in improving to 5-2. Sedley allowed six hits and two runs (one earned) with four strikeouts.

The Indians picked up the only run Ketner would need in the second inning. Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC) reached on an error to open the frame and went to second on a wild pitch. After being sacrificed to third by Andrew O’Neal (King, NC), Hatley scored on Weston Church’s (Salisbury, NC) chopper to the left side over a drawn in infield.

Lincoln Memorial picked up two of its three hits in the third inning, but ran into some tough luck when Storm Kaufman’s (Mirimar, FL) single to the right side struck Castro, who had singled to start the frame, for the second out. After a walk, Ketner got Sedley on a pop up to end the inning.

The Splitters would get only one other baserunner the rest of the game, which came in the fifth as Tewayne Willis (Hazard, KY) was hit by a pitch with two outs. He would steal second, but was stranded as Ketner struck out Kaufman. Catawba added an insurance run in the sixth as Lyerly led off with a single and scored on a double by Hatley.
