Sports Release March 28, 2008 13-run Third Lifts #28 Catawba To 24-12 Win Over Lincoln Memorial SALISBURY, NC - Catawba scored 13 runs in the third inning and out-slugged visiting Lincoln Memorial 24-12 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday night at Newman Park.Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC) had four hits, including two homers, and broke a school record by scoring six runs, while Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) provided six RBI to pace 28th-ranked Catawba. The Catawba Indians improve to 25-12 overall and 11-5 in the SAC, while the Railsplitters fall to 22-15-1 and 4-9. Lincoln Memorial grabbed the early lead on John Couch’s (Bonnyman, KY) bases-clearing double in the second for a 3-0 edge. Down 4-1 in the third, Catawba plated 13 runs (12 with two outs) on seven hits to take control. Baker singled home David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) with one out then after a groundout, LMU pitchers would issue five straight walks, three with the bases loaded, to give Catawba a 5-4 edge. Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC) singled in two runs and after Thomas was hit by a pitch, Baker drove home three runs with a double. Two-run homers by Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) and Lyerly would cap the scoring in the inning. The Railsplitters closed within 19-12 on a three-run homer by Casey Sedley (Miami, FL) in the eighth, but Catawba responded with five more runs in its eighth to double up LMU. Derek Treece (Powell, TN) and Storm Kaufman (Miramar, FL) each had three hits for LMU. Sedley had four RBI, while Treece and Couch each drove in three runs for the Splitters. -LMU- For additional
